The exhibition “Light and Shadow - Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in Italy” (08 Mar 2026–13 Dec 2026) at Museum Zitadelle Jülich presents Schirmer’s letters and plein-air studies and highlights his ambivalent impressions during his Italian journey. Italy was the pinnacle of training and a source of inspiration for 19th-century artists. Schirmer’s long-lost letters, combined with a selection of paintings — including previously unknown plein-air studies — document the artist’s struggle to find his path. An English companion booklet is available, and there is a family booklet with child-friendly approaches.
