The special exhibition "Schätze und Kuriositäten am Schleusinger Museum" at the NaturHistorisches Museum Schloss Bertholdsburg Schleusingen addresses finds from numerous excavations as well as donations and acquisitions. Archaeological objects are currently being found during construction work at Schloss Bertholdsburg; recent earthworks in the castle moat and in the historic knights' hall uncovered pottery shards and even small marbles. The fossils of the natural history collection were recovered in targeted paleontological excavations, in particular in the Thuringian Forest from roughly 295 million-year-old Rotliegend rock. Often each find tells a small story; the exhibits are largely unique pieces or curiosities.
