In his painting, Nguyen Xuan Huy combines contemporary visual worlds with motifs and narrative traditions from European art history. At the centre is the monumental painting “Mission Phoenix,” completed in 2025, which draws on Greek, Egyptian and Chinese conceptions of the phoenix and connects them with the fire at Notre-Dame and the fragility of culture and European civilization.
