Through selected works, the collection presentation “Think Freely, Create Anew!” traces the course of art as a reflection of social and artistic freedom. It begins in the late nineteenth century and extends through abstraction and New Objectivity to Informel and Constructivist tendencies in the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibition also addresses the profound ruptures caused by the world wars and the persecution of numerous artists who were deemed “degenerate” under National Socialism and subjected to professional bans. Positions ranging from Georg Baselitz to contemporary artists examine the achievements, threats, and future of freedom.
