“For your eyes only. Miniatures der Romantik” shows at stilwerk Hamburg a concentrated show of portrait miniatures, which were particularly present in the city around 1800 to 1840 and were later replaced by early photographic methods. The focus is on the small formats of about 6 to 10 centimeters as well as their sophisticated materials and techniques. The starting point is 60 portrait miniatures from the Kunsthalle collection, which can be seen together here for the first time. This is complemented by around 200 loans from European museums and private property. As frames, brochures or cases, these works were intimate memorabilia, often worn close to the body and accessible only to a narrow circle.
