Olaf Nicolai’s installation “The Flame of the Revolution, reclining” refers to a monumental revolutionary monument in Halle and transforms its political formal language into a new spatial context. The work combines sculpture, memory and a shift in meaning. In the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, the history of a public monument becomes readable: form, colour, political mission and later change become part of an artistic reflection on progress, ideology and the handling of historical signs.
