Why did citizens of Hamm found an association in 1886 to purchase an ancient Egyptian mummy? The studio exhibition “Die Männer hinter der Mumie” narrates the fascinating history of the Hamm Mummy Association anew and critically examines the nineteenth‑century enthusiasm for ancient Egypt and colonial collecting practices. The exhibition contextualizes the association’s social background, explains the financing via so‑called “mummy shares,” and addresses the subsequent history of the mummy, which today survives only in a black‑and‑white photograph after destruction during WWII.
