“Übern Zaun. Gärten und Menschen” examines gardens as social spaces in Germany and traces how they have changed since the end of the Second World War. The exhibition looks at allotments, domestic gardens and community gardens, asking about their uses, their representative function and their transformation. Examples range from a garden rake made from ammunition casings and home-grown fruit and vegetables in the GDR to a ride-on lawnmower from the 1980s as evidence of the wish for a perfectly kept lawn. A section on current forms of gardening also addresses “Guerilla Gardening” and climate change. At the end, the exhibition presents a digital utopia by the Hamburg artist Jan Kamensky, who, as a “digital gardener”, transforms streets and city views into car-free green oases. It is on view at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig from 19 March 2025 to 10 January 2027.
