“Where shadows live” presents E. T. A. Hoffmann and Carl Maria von Weber as artists whose search for new artistic paths found expression in Romanticism, including fantastical, fairytale-like and uncanny facets of Black Romanticism. Both worked in Dresden, knew and valued one another, and saw themselves as both composers and writers. The exhibition refers to Hoffmann’s opera “Undine” in Dresden, Weber’s “Der Freischütz”, and Weber’s inspiration from Hoffmann’s “Phantasus” for his own novel fragment. It also foregrounds their shared interest in the idea of a Gesamtkunstwerk. Organised by the Kügelgenhaus - Museum of Dresden Romanticism to mark Hoffmann’s 250th birthday and the 200th anniversary of Weber’s death, the exhibition runs from 28 March to 6 September 2026 at Kügelgenhaus Dresden, Hauptstraße 13, 01097 Dresden.
