“Beyond the World: Der Blaue Reiter” is devoted to the Munich artists’ circle that sought to renew art and society at the beginning of the twentieth century. It focuses on its transnational networks of exchange, new visual languages and ways of life beyond bourgeois norms. The exhibition presents more than 240 works, including Franz Marc’s colour theory, Wassily Kandinsky’s abstractions and Alexander Sacharoff’s performative transgressions of boundaries. Particular emphasis is placed on the movement’s women artists, including Gabriele Münter, Elisabeth Epstein, Marianne von Werefkin and Maria Franck-Marc, as well as on newly acquired works from the Lenbachhaus collection shown here for the first time.
