Janet Cardiff’s sound installation “The Forty Part Motet” makes the sculptural and spatial qualities of sound palpable. Forty separately recorded voices from Thomas Tallis’s Renaissance composition “Spem in Alium” resound through an equal number of oval-arranged loudspeakers and can be heard individually or as a polyphonic whole, depending on one’s position in the space.
