The exhibition presents 235 sheets from Charlotte Salomon’s work “Life? or Theatre?”, comprising 769 works and created in exile in southern France between 1940 and 1942. In intensely coloured gouaches, the German-Jewish artist combined autobiographical and fictional scenes with elements of literature, film, theatre, music and philosophy to create an experimental narrative about family, persecution, fate and self-determination.
