Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger explore the origins and production of building materials and their global entanglements with resources, labour, and economies. Their research took them to cement plants, flat-glass production sites, open-cast mines, and brickworks in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Anatolia, and Cuba. Through their collaboration, producers, geologists, and industrial museums become contributors to the exhibition. Painting and drawing serve as starting points for conversations, as documentation of the journeys, and as autonomous artworks. The title refers to historical trade relations between the GDR and Socialist Ethiopia, in which the New Mugher cement plant was also paid for with lentils.
