The “painter and thinker” Eberhard Havekost (1967-2019) was one of the great hopes of German contemporary art and since the beginning of the 21st century has also been the focus of international interest in public museums and renowned private collections through exhibitions and purchases. His visual language singularly combined the precise representation of the visible world with the conditions of perception itself, in particular with the digital “user interfaces” of smartphones, tablets and image processing programs. As a result, his works always seem cool and extremely contemporary, but at the same time they have a visual puzzle: through cutouts, focuses and targeted “blow-up effects” they irritate premature expectations and sometimes look like picturesque deep drilling behind the facades of digital modernism.
