“First Things. for Outlook” at MARKK – Museum am Rothenbaum in Hamburg focuses on the beginnings of the collection’s history: on those objects that were first recorded about 150 years ago. This not only documents early ethnographic collection, but also makes it visible as part of an institutional memory. The exhibition mainly gathers gifted pieces that came to Hamburg by sea and were intended to transport ideas of other cultures. Among other things, hand-carved figures from Africa, Buddha statues from Myanmar and a Chinese ship model are on display.
