The exhibition ‘This is the modern world’ in the Hamburger Kunsthalle illuminates the cultural and social upheavals between 1900 and 1960. Around 125 works show the diversity of modernity, from Expressionism to Bauhaus to Surrealism, and reflect the influence of psychology, philosophy and politics on art and society. In addition to well-known artists such as Picasso, Delaunay-Terk and Beckmann, the impact of Nazi ideology is also addressed. The presentation offers a multifaceted insight into the development of modern design and ways of thinking in a turbulent epoch.
