The work group “Artist Bananas – Homages to Great Artists” by Thomas Baumgärtel represents a multi-layered project in which a single motif – the banana – becomes a medium of stylistic translation, ironic refraction and iconographic transformation. Baumgärtel, who has established the banana as his artistic signet since the 1980s, uses it here not only as a recognizable trademark, but also as a variable pictorial instrument that absorbs and recodes art-historical positions, manuscripts and artist personalities. The focus is on the banana as an iconic sign. It acts as an author signature, a pop-cultural symbol and a projection surface of art-historical references.
