“Pippis Papa und eine wirklich wahre Geschichte aus dem Pazifik” at MARKK uses a well-known figure from children’s literature as a starting point for examining colonial images and ideas. The exhibition asks what lies behind the story of the “Südseekönig” and how such narratives continue to shape perceptions of other cultures. Through historical objects, pop-cultural references and new perspectives, it questions familiar childhood memories and shows links between adventure fantasies, exoticism and colonial thinking. It runs from 6 September 2024 to 27 June 2027 at MARKK, Rothenbaumchaussee 64, 20148 Hamburg; regular tickets cost 10 euros.
